Muslim silence over the Uighur crisis; forgotten humanity?

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation-the self-proclaimed defender of the interests of the Muslim world, remains silent as China continues its inhumane imprisonment of Uyghur Muslims in XinJiang. While the 57-member states of the OIC remain quiet, Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt have gone one step further to deport Uyghurs who have taken refuge from Chinese abominations. Under pressure from China, Muslim governments are giving China a free pass.

At first numerous Islamic countries acknowledged the atrocities committed against Uyghurs and communicated their support. A large part of the Islamic world even censured China for its crimes against its Muslims Brethren. Uyghurs, who had escaped from the heavily police-controlled state of XinJiang expecting to be safe guarded by these nations, now find themselves being double crossed by their own.

The Pakistani government is under tremendous pressure from China because of CPEC, the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, a $62 billion (about £44 billion) monetary venture comprising of various infrastructure projects. Despite the fact that Pakistan is considered to be one of the leading Muslim countries, the guarantee of Chinese money seems to be more important than its responsibility to stop the wrongdoings against the Uyghur Muslims. The Pakistani government has made it clear that it will do whatever China orders them to do as long as its relationship with China is unaffected. Moreover, while many Pakistanis view CPEC to be an enormous economic win for Pakistan the reality is that China has given Pakistan a loan which China knows it can never repay.

Umer Muhammad Khan is a school teacher and activist who, under enormous risk to himself and his family, has helped dozens of families escape from the Chinese genocide through an underground rail road. However, Pakistan is no longer a safe haven for this Muslim minority group. In 2015 the Pakistani police raided Khan’s Uyghur language school in Islamabad and threatened him as well as his family. Since then he has been arrested many times. Uyghur refugees are now being deported back to Chinese camps and are uncertain of their future ahead.

Pakistan isn't the only nation to quietly agree with China's desires. In 1952, the Turkish government offered haven to Uyghurs escaping Xinjiang region after China was taken over by the Communist government. Some Uyghur Muslims were offered transitory residency.

Turkish government has made a dreary guarantee to permit them to dwell in Turkey with no visa limitations. Notwithstanding, simultaneously, it is likewise striking Uyghur homes, capturing many individuals, and organizing extraditions with Beijing. Turkey attributes a large volume of its trade to China which makes China an important economic partner. Therefore, Turkey is under tension to deport Uyghur Muslims back to China in the same way as Pakistan. Egypt is playing its role in deporting Uyghurs as well.

While Muslim countries have been deafeningly silent, Western countries such as the US and New Zealand have repeatedly called out China and demanded justice for the Uyghurs. “The situation in Xinjiang is one of the gravest human rights crises of our time,” Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward said. “At the U.N., we are asking for immediate access to Xinjiang for the U.N. high commissioner for Human Rights”.
